Wearing Glasses at Your Wedding
![]()
The days of “men don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses” are long gone. Besides, now that you’re getting married, dating is a thing of the past. Still, some brides (and grooms) worry about wearing frames on their wedding day, and try and find alternatives. Here, some eye-opening tips.
If you’re known for wearing glasses (think Tina Fey), think twice before dawning contacts on your wedding day. People expect to see you the way you normally look, and your glasses might be a welcome addition to your outfit. Glasses are often viewed as an accessory, and an attractive one at that.
Many brides “upgrade” to a more stylish pair, which is a fun idea, but will add to your budget. (If you decide to get a new pair, make sure they’re conservative enough that you can wear them again.) Your groom, also, might want to wear glasses for the big day, and if he’s more comfortable behind frames, let him. There’s no stigma or level of formality in which glasses would be unacceptable.
The most common alternative to glasses is, of course, contact lenses. However, only wear contacts if you’re used to them, and don’t have any contact-related problems (irritation, sensitivity, etc). You’ll look much better in your glasses than you will walking down the aisle rubbing your tear-stained eyes. If you’re not bothered by contacts, but aren’t comfortable wearing them for a long period of time, you can take them off after the ceremony and put frames on for your reception. If you combine the glasses with a change of outfits, it will complete your reception “look.”
Another option is laser surgery, but that’s a huge, and costly, step. Keep in mind, too, the time commitment involved, and whether or not you want to focus your energy on such a personal issue before your wedding.
Finally, if you are going to wear glasses, make sure your makeup artist knows. It’s common to add a little extra sparkle around your eyes to make them stand out behind the frames.
